I'm not far from the buckle of the Bible Belt. There is a lot of 'old time religion'. I think the ELCA Lutheran Church is quite progressive by comparison.
Thomas Frank wrote a book "What's the Matter With Kansas?" It is a commentary about small town America's move towards fundamentalism and conservative politics, even though the conservative politicians economic agenda screws them over.
